As an artist, I create work that explores the concept of escapism and its importance as a coping mechanism. I use a variety of mediums, including printmaking, metalwork, woodwork, and sculpture, to bring to life the historical fantasies that have always captured my imagination. I am passionate about keeping traditional craft methods alive through my work, and this includes drawing inspiration from historical artefacts, stories and imagery.
My inspiration derives from a range of sources, including Dungeons and Dragons, video games, and the folklore of my personal heritage. These are all avenues through which I have found distraction and relief from the challenges of the current global climate. Drawing inspiration from historical contexts activates my imagination and allows me to incorporate storytelling into my artistic practice.
I aim to articulate and respond to my interpretation of escapism. I believe that it is a necessary part of self-care, and I strive to create pieces that transport the viewer to a different time and place. The character I have developed within the narrative I have created is the persona I take on when making my work; the act of crafting is not just a form of self-expression but a means of personal escape. Through the utilisation of old processes and techniques, I aim to charge my work with a sense of history and nostalgia.
